It began a few days ago, when Webb announced that due to controversy with his label, upcoming album Stockholm Syndrome (which was originally due this week) would not be released traditionally in the foreseeable future. He stated in the original email (published here on Soul-Audio) that he would have to “move carefully” in his plans to distribute the album.
Rumor on the street was that the album contained a use of the word “sh–” in a song concerning the church’s relationship with gays (Patrol Magazine, if you’re looking for the source).
Now, Derek’s official website has been pulled, replaced with a message containing a Twitter link (here) with which to follow updates concerning the album. In the same note, Webb confirms that the controversy is far more complex than the use of one word. Leave it to the fine folks at DerekWebb.net to discover something extraordinary: the message has a code. A code which reads “Paradise is a Parking Lot.” Confused? Don’t be.
When typing this code in your URL box, it takes you here. This site contains a list of instructions (particularly useful for folks that live in Nashville) and a series of download links (perhaps to tracks of the CD?) that have yet to go live. By following the instructions, players should be given access to more information concerning the album, or perhaps the album itself. No one can be sure.
Needless to say, Webb’s latest project has just become the most anticipated album of 2009.

Can’t wait to hear this. I hate controversy, too much drama over something so simple…
I can guarantee that the controversy is not just over one song. It’s much bigger than that. I’m not speculating.
[...] brings me to the second thing you might want to know about. It is Derek Webb’s recent “Lost-style” mystery/game/scavenger hunt/fake-controversy thing. Long story-short: email’s went out to fans from Webb saying “my new album’s [...]
