Big Daddy Weave

  • Rating: / 10

Big Daddy Weave have spent the last several years traveling the country and building up a more than solid fan base with their acoustic-flavored pop.  Now, it’s time for a Christmas record that wraps the signature Big Daddy Weave sound around tunes both new and old.  The result is a solid one, with few disappointments.

“O Come, All Ye Faithful” starts things off pretty safe, following the melody line and really just slightly updating the arrangement but follower “Joy To The World” gets things moving with a banjo line that runs throughout, lending a killer texture to the track.  “Glory” is an original track that could have just as easily been off of one of the group’s earlier efforts and seriously sounds like Mike Weaver is channeling Dave Matthews (in a good way.)

“O Come Emmanuel” keeps the Matthews vibe going with some subtle sax from Joe Shirk and Weaver’s powerful vocals again leading the way, as “Go Tell It On the Mountain” is fairly predictable and safe once again.  In the meantime, keep your ears peeled for the potential crossover success of original song “I’ll Be Brave On Christmas.”  Featuring a lyric that speaks of missing a loved one who’s off at war (“I’m so proud of you/I hope you come home soon/But until you do/I’ll be brave this Christmas”) and a solid pop background, it’s the sort of track that’s tailor-made for Delilah.

“Peace on Earth” is a solid acoustic slow jam, again finding Weaver honing his inner DM, both vocally and instrumentally, as “Christ Is Come” is a radio-ready retread of the group’s hit from a few years ago.  “Silent Night” is appropriately subdued and Weaver’s arrangement works well while a jacked up, fun for all rendition of “Angels We Have Heard on High” brings things to a happy close.

In a year that has seen a few decent Christmas records emerge, Big Daddy Weave solidly stakes their claim out among them.  Christ Is Come brings their sound together with the classic carols and ends up making beautiful music.  This one’ll keep you warm by the fire this Christmas.
