Review: OBB – Bright Side

OBBChristian music has always found itself running the tightrope, attempting to showcase messages of substance alongside musical arrangements that seek to be relevant and compelling. It’s a dicey walk for many as they seek to alternately minister and entertain, one of the few creative outlets with such a challenge. There are some who navigate these waters with practiced ease, crafting works that accomplish both while others wrestle with one or the other or, in many cases, both.

Curb Records recording artists OBB is a group who errs on the side of putting the message first and that’s a message laden with faith and hope.

Review: Guy Penrod – Guy Penrod Christmas

GuyPenrodThe beauty of a Christmas song is in its power to immediately bring you to a place of nostalgia. A simple refrain, the jingle of a bell and the tinkling of piano keys, can transport you back to Christmases long ago or just last year, warmed to the heart by memories of family and friends gathered around the tree, thoughts of quiet snowfalls, and contemplations of the beautiful story of the Savior’s birth. Guy Penrod’s latest effort, the succinctly titled Christmas, is a warm and heartfelt journey down that same path of nostalgic reflection, honoring faith and family.

Review: Justin Jarvis – Atmospheres (Live)

JustinJarvisJustin Jarvis has long been making rumblings from his home in Ft. Lauderdale, FL where he’s served as the worship pastor for The Harbour Church, penning original tracks for his local congregation, echoing their journeys through the worship. That’s been a key component to the artist’s work and ministry, seeking to marry the ordinary with the divine.

Review: Desperation Band – Banner

DesperationBandThe years marked by our time in high school in college are typically known as those uncertain years, the times when we’re searching, growing, and trying to find out who we really are and where we fit into this world. Yet, the irony is that those questions oftentimes follow us into adulthood, nagging at our hearts and souls and leaving us feeling lost and alone at times. Thus, it’s refreshing when a youth centered movement like Desperation Band, focused on the hearts of the younger generation, is able to transcend the years as they do on their latest live recording, Banner.

Review: Michael W. Smith – The Spirit of Christmas

MichaelWSmithFor some artists, Christmas albums are simply a one-off way to appease their fans, generate some extra income, and keep their name in the headlines before the release of their next project. Yet, for others like Michael W. Smith, the recording of a Christmas project has become something of an art form in and of itself, the artist having recorded three such records over the course of his long running career, each album offering up something different. And with the release of The Spirit of Christmas, Smith maintains that trend and offers up what might be his best holiday offering yet.
