Review: Jars of Clay – 20

JarsofClayIn today’s postmodern world, it’s rare to see an anniversary celebrated of any depth. At one time, marriage was seen as a lifelong endeavor, the words “till death do us part” carrying a heavy solemnity, in today’s world it’s rare to see those that make it to ten years. Similarly, where in times past a career choice was a long-term decision, with workers logging in twenty and thirty years and receiving the proverbial gold watch for their service, today’s generation is much more fluid, bouncing from career choice to career choice, oftentimes by necessity as the world continues to evolve and change.

In a band those dynamics of life are no different and perhaps that what makes the latest release, 20, from Jars of Clay so significant. It’s hard to believe that the young men who met at Greenville College in Illinois have been together for twenty years, releasing their first album Frail so long ago. Yet, twenty years have come and gone and, with them, an impressive array of albums and opportunities that have always seen Jars of Clay pressing on toward making a greater art with each and every endeavor.
